About A New

by Rochelle Soetan

What is it about a new thing that makes us feel so good? For example, moving to a new country can surround us with novel sights and new experiences. Purchasing a new phone or new car makes us feel as if we are upgrading ourselves in society. Finding a new friend, acquiring a new work environment, or even making those ‘New Year’s Resolutions’ (that we may eventually break) can all make us feel as though we are making progress – not yet made. The thing about novelty is that it quickly disappears once we become familiar, adjusted, and comfortable with those people, places, and things around us. We are then prodded to find ‘yet another’ brand new experience to have or see.

A new year is here by natural default. We didn’t have to look for it; just accept its cosmic arrival. Somehow, it gives us great optimism to be granted another 365 days to start something new and exciting. To dream a little more. To bury old dramas and create new memories. To take ahold of fresh opportunities. We’ve reached that time of year when the days on the calendar begin to dictate where we’ve been, where we’re going, and how long it will take us to get there. There are new birthdays to celebrate, new holidays to honor, and new reasons to take action. We start to look ahead and consider our hopes and dreams for the coming months. But the danger with dreaming is that it’s completely dependent on our frame of mind. Just a moment of negativity can affect a year of positive daydreaming, thus leaving us in the dark once more.

As the New Year takes its course, the issues we thought we could ignore or delay will start to demand our attention. It is not a threatening habit. It’s simply time to organize, review, revise and shed some excess plumage. Consider redirecting your thoughts on what’s presently good in your life, not on what you left behind. Each moment throughout each day affords us with new opportunities to consciously think, deliberate, reason, plan and act. You don’t need to wait for a new year on the calendar to move forward in any area of your life. And though we are hardwired to seek out and appreciate novelty, we can take advantage of our present moments and what they afford us most – gratitude and awareness for the journey ahead.

Of course, new things are meant to captivate our attention. We wouldn’t get much done if ordinary things captivated us constantly. Appreciate the new while consciously considering where the old has brought you to. New change and opportunities are beneficial as long as old habits and actions aren’t repeated. You can intentionally improve your moments, days, weeks, and months long before a new year arrives.

2017 was a tumultuous year, not just for individuals but for the world. 2018 is now here. What kind of year will it be? What will make it great will be the effort you now apply.  Make it count. Focus on the positive and you can make a real move towards a fulfilling future. You are in the driver’s seat and only you have the key. Get to where you need to go in 2018.

Love and light for your New Year!

  1. Spirit is always doing a new thing, I say! To be made anew, feel refreshed and reinvigorated is to stoke the ever-burning fires of our life purposes. We humans tend to like a new slate, though every day presents such one opportunity. My wish for 2018 is that I find and harness every moment to connect more intimately with those I love while making authentic connections with a wider world.

  2. As the calendar, clocks and time moves forwards the old phrase still remains that “If you do not change, then nothing changes.” I agree that 2017 has been a year where changes have affected this world in way where many have not expected. But, at the same time there have been opportunites for growth in those times of where we have seen torment and lawlessness. Also, there have been alignment where speaking out #metoo has been a too long awaited movement as a sign for togetherness. Let’s let 2018 continue on this same thread of coming together, standing up, and moving in a positive direction and not just as a resolution but a revolution.

    1. Dr. Tre, it is with great honor and respect that we are granted new breath and new moments, each day, to move towards a world that can come together, stand up, and advocate for all things positive and necessary. We are one. We ARE the revolution. Thank you for your endearing engagement on this platform.
