The Color of Life

Modified and Reposted from 2013

“Remember, green’s your color. You are spring.” – Gwendolyn Brooks

The Earth births a color that speaks louder than words. It breathes through leaves, whispers through branches, and tells truth without needing a tongue. Can you hear it? The ancient storytellers and quiet prophets of life, death, and rebirth, plants and trees are the strongest symbols that mirror us. Carrying truth older than language, they hold our reflection in their roots, showing us our own fragile seasons and relentless returns. Do you feel it? The Earth gives us much to evolve and survive – biofuels, fossil fuels, oxygen, raw energy – but this wild inhale of green offers something greater: valuable lessons on how we are shaped, broken, and remade by the very nature we stand in.

Psychologically, people and trees are tangled in a sacred dance. This ageless love affair balances our emotions and connects us with our deepest natural feelings, an intimate relationship with only ourselves. Beyond wood, leaves, and bark, trees are sentinels living inside our minds, inhabiting the silent chambers of our consciousness.  To heal and be whole, we must have trees to touch, see, hide behind, and know that they exist. They are comfort, food, wealth, shelter—the original providers.

Through time and across cultures, trees have held the world upright. They have been pillars of our communities and part of our existence for generations. They have provided anchors of abundant inspiration and have been the givers of breath and soul, muses for poets, painters, dancers, and dreamers from almost every society on the planet. Yet, these same trees, once cherished, are being neglected, cut down, and cast aside by new generations blinded to their worth. When we abandon this bond, and this form of carelessness transpires, we invite decay—not just of forests but of spirit and culture itself. Devolution becomes inevitable.

Green—the color of growth, harmony, and development—restores our natural energy and gives way for new beginnings. Its’ biological chi hums peace, restores balance, and brings positive vibrations to our senses, our homes, and our souls, thus nurturing that which has been imbalanced and depleted.

As with the heart, so with the spirit. – St. Augustine

When we experience stress or anxiety, a scenery of greenery can aid to bring equilibrium, relaxation, coherence and improved health. Such is the case when we experience a deep sense of tranquility and awakening while walking through a forest or meadow. We are able to breathe slower, deeper, and clearer. Trees purify the very air we breathe, reminding us that life is both fragile and fierce. At home, my plants are cosmic anchors—silent reminders to release fear, welcome change, and relax with enthusiasm. Green plants help me to comprehend and appreciate the sacred arc of life, from seed to shadow to soil.

Everything we need comes from the Earth. It’s already here, waiting quietly. Flowers, shrubs, ferns, fungi, insects—they’re all allies in our survival dance. Our gardens and greenhouses give way for the reproduction of green leafy vegetables, like spinach, zucchini, kale, brussel sprouts, cabbage, arugula, celery, peas, okra, basil, lettuce, parsley – a verdant army of vitamins and minerals packed with disease-fighting phytochemicals, healing power, memory, mood, hydration, and strength. We can better educate ourselves on how this ancient alliance has been our fellow traveler and a soul and place at our table.

Natural and organic, green on the scene stimulates the healing of all things. What lies beneath a tree, is a hint of history. A root of resources. A journey of wisdom. A cue for connection. Beneath us lies a call to connect, to claim, to grow gratitude from solid ground. Green dares us to shed what no longer serves. To step into the unknown with open hands. To move, with grace and grit, toward greener pastures.
